On average, hiring managers spend 10 seconds looking at your resume before moving on. Sharing your brand in a way that’s understandable and professional is crucial for your success. This statistic sounds scary, but you can prepare, overcome, and win your dream job!

Here’s what I’ve learned: I have refined my personal resume to maintain one page and refresh my experiences every few months. My technique brought me to MIT for my master’s, a business strategy manager position by 25, and an offer in data analytics from SpaceX. Drawing from my professional experiences, I have transformed resumes for my diverse clients.

I’ve written so many resumes since beginning Launched by Liz in February 2020. I work with clients across industries including – marketing, consulting, agricultural education, tech, finance, and engineering fields. From college students to mid-career professionals, resumes are necessary to show off your skills. Any job or college application will ask you to tell your story via a resume.

Liz upgrades resumes for college students to mid-career professionals across industries.

Resumes are a universal requirement for ANY job or college application. No matter your industry, career stage, or personal experience – my resume advice applies to you. These are 3 resume must haves that will take your professional brand to the next level.

1. Consistent Formatting: Your resume is not the place to practice self expression. Ever heard of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)? This software is how companies are downloading information from job applicants and organizing them to automate the hiring process. You could be taking yourself out of the running for the interview if the system can’t process and organize your data. Play it safe when it comes to formatting.

Upgrade with my go-to formats that worked for MIT, SpaceX, and more:

2. Contact Information: Want to know if you got the interview? Well, the hiring manager will need your phone number to contact you. Your resume is the first place they will look to reach out. Job applications require lots of paperwork – human resources needs to load all of your information into their systems. Having your address at the top of your resume can prevent unnecessary emails, asking for your information, and expedite your interview process. Don’t forget to include details on how to stay in touch at the top of your resume.

3. Your Impact Quantified: In the 10 seconds the hiring manager views your resume, they will ask “why should YOU win this job?” Quantifying the impact of your experiences helps illustrate the value you create in the workplace. It is a great way to ground hiring managers in your worth, especially when they are comparing multiple candidates. Demonstrate the difference you can make in your future role by measuring your work.

Adding numbers to your resume is a major upgrade. If you’re struggling to quantify, I can help! Book a premium or standard resume and I’ll take the stress out of writing your story:

You only have one page to share your experiences and why you’re the right candidate for the job. Incorporate these three must haves to stand out among the crowd. Make your single page count! Submitting your application is your chance to change your future.

Your resume is the heart of your professional brand. It helps you get your foot in the door and get noticed by companies. Once you’re noticed, you can land an interview. If you’re invited to interview, you can win your dream job. Your resume has the power to change your career path. Don’t wait to invest time and effort into making your mark and sharing your story.
