3 People you Need: How to Build a Professional Network from Scratch

Do you feel like you have a thriving network? I started cultivating a network from my first internship as a buyer at Lockheed Martin. It has continued to grow and evolve ever since. I check in and connect with colleagues across industries, levels, and experiences. It helps me maintain a well-rounded perspective for my daily job. It also provides me exposure to new opportunities.

I have no doubt my network brought me to MIT and beyond.

Some networking connections turn into life-long friendships!

Building a professional network can set you apart from the pack.

You never know how a contact in your network could impact your path. It could be something as small as a comment that sparks a life-changing idea. It could also be a big endorsement to land your next promotion. Are you connected to people who can help you reach your goals?

Here’s the people you need to have in your life to launch your network:

Build your network with the The Guide:

The Guide is someone in your life who has more experience than you. It could be someone within your field or your desired career path. This person is able to provide you with perspective on life beyond your current role. They can offer perspective when it comes to finding the next role, growing the right skills, and demonstrating leadership in your current role. The guide can advocate for you and accelerate your development.

Improve your Networking Skills with The Friend:

The friend is someone you can ask all your questions. You don’t have to be embarrassed when you go to the friend. Your friend can show you new ways of doing things and expand your view point. They can offer feedback or solidarity when it comes to tough situations at work and in life. The friend is there to support you as we navigate work/life balance.

Navigate your Career Path with The Observer:

The Observer is someone you work with directly. They can provide direct detailed feedback on the quality of your work. It doesn’t have to be your manager. It could be a stakeholder or leader on your team as well. Gaining feedback is critical for your growth. It’s better to know how to improve in real-time, rather than waiting until your performance review. The observer can help you as you strive to be better.

Networking relationships are critical for your career growth.

As humans, we are meant to collaborate. We thrive in communities. We’re meant to help one another as we figure our paths. I found so much value in taking time to build and maintain a healthy network. If you’re network isn’t the best it can be, here’s the perfect reminder to check in.

Connecting with others to learn is a form of self-care. It will help you expand your career path beyond what you know. Networking can open your path up to the right next opportunity. It can be uncomfortable to reach outside of your comfort zone. When we’re uncomfortable, we grow. We can do hard things… and it is always worth it.
