Find a New Job in the New Year

Are you making your resolutions? Don’t forget to add your career to that list. 2022 is full of opportunity. With the great resignation in full swing, the labor market is in high demand. Companies can’t hire new employees fast enough.

There are plenty of opportunities out there waiting for you!

Thanks for picking me to be your career coach!

The biggest mistake I’ve seen as a career coach:

When clients assume opportunities are guaranteed, they miss out. Your school name, your previous experience, or a few referrals don’t guarantee a job offer. Job searching requires a strong professional brand, a broad strategic network, and a little luck! There are several opportunities for you to make a change, but you have to plan ahead for your goal. If you assume things will fall into place without a plan, the dream job could pass you by.

The average American job searches for 5-6 months:

In the first few months, you may hear from smaller companies or lateral roles. Your job search time could be longer or shorter depending on the strength of your network. Don’t jump at a demotion or work for an organization you’re not passionate about.

Patience and strategy is key if you want to make a career upgrade in 2022.

Let’s build your career plan together!

What should you do next?

  1. Create a Plan: Figure out what opportunities you’d love to take on next. What are your interests and passions? What kind of work inspires you? How do your skills align to the job market?
  2. Strengthen your Network: The holidays and new year are a great time to check in from co-workers to mentors alike. Wish your colleagues seasons greeting and grab their advice. It’s a great way to stay in touch and strengthen your connections.
  3. Polish your Professional Brand: Get your resume ready in case any of your targeted jobs move faster than you expect! It’s also the time for new year Linkedin posts. Make sure your profile is ready to be seen before you post.
  4. Demonstrate Excellence at Work: The end of the year signals new beginnings. For many of you, performance review season is coming up. Make sure you have the data you need to show off your value and make your case. The new year is your moment to shine!
  5. Look the Part: I always reevaluate my work wardrobe at the end of the year. Ensure your style represents your best professional self! Clothes with holes or fraying hems need to be repaired or donated. With the return to office upon us, don’t wait to get the pieces you need to make a statement.
